The band traveled to Thousand Oaks High School for preliminary competition in WBA Championships on Saturday, Nov. 19. The group came in fourth place in preliminaries out of 15 AAA class bands, earning a spot in Sunday's championship competition.

On Sunday, in pouring rain, the band traveled an hour north to Santa Barbara City College for finals. Of the fifteen A/AA/AAA bands in finals, eleven dropped out before noon due to the inclement weather. As the competition started, the decision was made by the Valley band directors and students to "do it for the seniors," and they donned ponchos, parents held umbrellas, and the equipment was made ready.

As they marched onto the field, the rain let up and it was lightly misting as they performed their best show of the season to a sparse crowd under umbrellas. The campus setting and view of the ocean across the street from the stadium seats was majestic.

The "troupe" of vocalists changed up the lyrics to "Into the Woods" to reflect their joy at performing in the rain at championships. "Into the rain, it's time to go, it may be all in vain we know, into the rain, it's time and so, we have to make the journey," and "No more sunshine, only rain...."

There was no tension, only excitement, as various section leaders led the students in prayer before they took the field. In the end, with only four bands performing, the third place trophy was theirs, ending a memorable season for the band and its 24 seniors. The score was a phenomenal 4 points higher than Saturday, without rehearsal or a run-through. It was the highest score the band has received in four years - 89.20.

The students and directors were elated. But they all agreed, the most important thing was, they had so much fun!

After instruments were dried and packed into the trailers, they all headed up the steps to a beautiful celebration luncheon spread out by the booster parents under the campus eaves and out of the rain, with special tables and place settings for the seniors. Hot food, cake, and warm camaraderie among students and parents created a memory that will not be forgotten.

Then they packed up for a cozy five-hour bus ride home to the beautiful Valley Christian campus. The Conservatory building shone like a jewel as they rode up the hill. It was an incredible end to a fantastic season for this family of marching band and color guard students and parents.

Valley Christian's 2011 Field Show, "Into the Woods," won the top Sweepstakes trophy in all three previous Northern California WBA competitions, along with many caption awards, and finally, in a limited field of competition, in the pouring rain, against bands from Southern California and Arizona, the final Championship Third Place trophy and bronze medals for the students.

Congratulations, students, directors and parents on a wonderful season! Thanks to all for all of the dedication, support, hard work and love you gave to our band and staff.
